AS Roma say that central defender Cristian Chivu will remain at the club next season, after approaches from Internazionale and Real Madrid came to nothing.
The 26-year-old Romania international's current deal runs out at the end of next season and Roma now expect Chivu to leave on a free transfer at that point.
Sporting director Daniele Prade said: "Cristian Chivu will remain at Roma. He will stay with us until the end of the season. He will then leave on a free.
"There is a complete breakdown between us and his agents. Roma have lost £13million in this affair and the gate receipts of a friendly. This was Real Madrid's offer."
Chivu has been with the club from the Italian capital for four seasons, having previously spent three years with Dutch giants Ajax
